Privacy Policy
Ratesniffers respects your privacy and is committed to handling personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the 13 Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). This policy explains what we collect, why, how we use it, and the rights you have.
What we collect
We collect two broad categories of information:
1. Information you give us— when you submit an enquiry through the “Talk to a broker” flow, fill in a calculator, or subscribe to The Weekly: name, email, phone, postcode, loan-related preferences (purpose, deposit, loan amount), and any free-text notes you choose to add.
2. Information collected automatically — when you browse the site: IP address, browser type, device type, pages viewed, referring URL, and timestamps. We use cookies and standard web analytics for this. Calculator inputs are processed entirely in your browser; the numbers you enter into a calculator are never sent to our servers.
Why we collect it
We use your personal information to:
- Connect you with a licensed mortgage broker who can help with your enquiry.
- Send you the newsletter you subscribed to (and only that — no third-party promos).
- Improve the site, fix bugs, and understand which guides and tools are useful.
- Detect abuse, spam, and security threats.
- Comply with legal obligations under Australian law.
Who we share it with
When you submit an enquiry, your contact details are forwarded to the licensed mortgage broker who will handle your enquiry. The broker becomes responsible for their own handling of that information once received, and will share their own privacy policy and Credit Guide with you directly.
We use a small set of vetted service providers to operate the site — for example, email delivery, hosting, analytics, and booking software. These providers process data on our instructions and are bound by contract not to use it for any other purpose. We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
We may disclose information if compelled by law (subpoena, regulator, court order), or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Ratesniffers, our users, or the public.
Cookies and analytics
Cookies are small files set in your browser. We use them to remember your preferences (e.g. which calculator you last used) and to measure aggregate site performance via standard analytics. You can disable cookies in your browser settings; some interactive features may stop working if you do.
How long we keep it
Enquiry submissions are retained for as long as needed to support your request, plus the period required by Australian law (broker records typically 7 years for credit advice). Newsletter subscribers stay in our list until they unsubscribe; analytics data is retained in aggregate form indefinitely. You can request deletion at any time (see below).
Your rights under the APPs
You have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct information that is inaccurate, out-of-date, or incomplete.
- Request deletion of your information (subject to legal retention obligations).
- Withdraw consent for marketing or unsubscribe from emails at any time.
- Make a complaint about how your information has been handled.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@ratesniffers.com.au. We aim to respond within 30 days.
Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information — encrypted transport (HTTPS) for everything served from this site, restricted-access storage, and routine audits of our service providers. No system is perfectly secure; you share information with us at your own risk.
Privacy complaints
If you believe we have mishandled your personal information, please contact us first at hello@ratesniffers.com.au. We will investigate and respond within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can refer the matter to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au. Our broader complaints process is on the Complaints page.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last reviewed” date at the top reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be notified at the top of the home page or by email to active subscribers.
